I read Lothar Katz’s excerpt on negotiations in Korea and found it be highly accurate, but somewhat outdated. Since the World Cup experience in 2002, Seoul, in particular, has elevated itself a highly international city. It is evident everywhere, from street signs and streamlined public transit to increased information and signage throughout all areas of the city. It is certainly affected Korean business as well, increasing Korean understanding and openess to international business travellers. Although many KOreans continue to adhere to traditional mentality and tendencies described in the excerpt, I find many younger professionals torn between an increased affinity for the effiencies of western business methods and maintaining the old ways in the guidance of their seniors. I think that many travellers will be pleasantly surprised by the increased openness in KOrean business in comparision to the environment that existed just 5 years ago.

Thanks, Jookyung! Business culture is always changing and especially younger people tend to be more open than older ones. While Seoul may be a bit ahead of the rest of the country and those people who are young today may (and often do) become more conservative as they grow older, I’ll try to address your inputs in the next revision.
