Information about Ethiopia

Jun 15, 08 Posted in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world and has been for decades. It was widely anticipated that democracy will bring the much needed reforms to turn this country around. However this has not happened. Even though the country officially is democratic and has elections, the same person has been in charge since 1991. The government is still heavily involved in the economy and has not privatized many businesses.

Ethiopia is a large country with many unexploited natural resources such as copper, platinum and natural gas. However foreigners are not allowed to explore without partnering with the government.
On the other hand Ethiopia is one of the largest coffee producing nations in the world but most of the profits are heavily taxed and the government controls most of the coffee plantations.

Ethiopia can also capitalize on the recent run up in commodity prices by excavating its natural resources. Ethiopia needs foreign investments to achieve this but the foreign investors are discouraged by the restrictive government.
