National Strikes Hurting Business in India (and Elsewhere?)
Jun 18, 08 Posted in GeneralHas anyone ever thought of bizarre reasons that business can stop for couple of days in India. There had been some interesting incidents where people have protested brining life to standstill for a day or two, for
example ‘bandh’ was called few days back when government raised fuel price. State-owned Oil companies have been losing tens of millions of dollars everyday in selling gas at below their cost, how can people expect gas at year old price when price of oil has doubled from $70 to $140 a barrel.
Few years back, a famous actor from Southern part of India died of a cardiac arrest and a bandh was called in Bangalore, as a mark of respect to the veteran actor, as shops and commercial establishments were closed for a day. The funny thing is these strikes hurt the people of the very place they are carried out in. Is there an equivalent of such a practice anywhere else in the world? Or are India is the only ones who shutdown themselves city wide, state wide, country wide - to show unhappiness - and in the process inflict more damage on themselves.
We used to hear - in Japan - when factory workers wanted to show their displeasure - they would produce goods more than their companies could sell !! Ouch.. I wonder if that’s true.?
